Oreo Bits – Matcha Latte

Hello!  Today’s post is about a Japanese twist on an American classic.  I’m talking about Oreo Bits – Matcha Latte.

Oreo Bits – Matcha Latte

I think you can all guess where I received this little bag of treats… why yes, it was an OyatsuBox.  How did you know?

I don’t think I have to describe Oreos do I?   They’re a legend in their own right.   Just in case you have been living under a rock for about… I don’t know50 years,  Oreos are “two chocolate wafers separated by a cream filling” according to everybody’s best friend Wikipedia.  Fun fact: I used to adore Oreos.  My favourite ones were the white chocolate covered ones. Mmm…  Can you still buy those?  Asking for a friend…

With the matte latte variety, the white cream filling has been replaced with an eye-catching green matcha latte cream.   Matcha is a finely ground powder of green tea leaves, and has a distinct, bitter taste.  Oooh!    I was interested to see how they tasted, and with these being bitesized,  I had plenty to try for this review.

Again, I was surprised at how green they were.  It’s like the Green Tea Kit Kat all over again!

When I first opened the packet, I could immediately detect that trademark bitter matcha scent.  It reminded me of the Lotte Toppo Matcha Milk , except this was a touch sharper.

The chocolate biscuit part of the Oreo was as enjoyable as ever.  They are my favourite part of Oreos and part of me wishes they were sold on their own, although the day that happens will be a sad day for my waistline.

The matcha latte cream filling was surprisingly good.    It has more of the typical matcha bitterness compared to other matcha confectionery.    Usually when matcha is mixed with things such as chocolate,  it is white chocolate with a hint of matcha, and I have to admit I was expecting a rather creamy, sweet taste.    The bitter matcha taste goes well with the chocolate biscuit.  They  bounce off each other in a way.  The combination of two means that the Oreo hits the spot for a bitter craving, as well as satisfying a sweet tooth at the same time.

Because I am useless, and have taken so long to share these with you all, they are currently out of stock on OyatsuCafe.   I’ll keep an eye out to see if they do come back into stock, and if/when they do I’ll update this post with a link.

Would I repurchase the Oreo Bits – Matcha Latte again?  You know what…  I think I would.  I already prefer them to the normal variety, and hey, matcha is good for you right?

Would you ever try a green Oreo?

‘matcha is good for you’ is a phrase I try to use a lot too, to justify all sorts of cakey things :)
