Calpis Soda Gummies

Posted in Lifestyle

Hello!  Ever since I tried the Kabaya Watermelon Gummy Candy, I have been trying my best to sample the other gummies in my stash to see how they compared.   After a lot of deliberation (so much choice – I need to stop hoarding my OyatsuBoxes!) I decided to give the Calpis Soda Gummies a go.

They say:

These gummies are styled after Asahi’s Calpis Soda, the sweet and milky soft-drink sold all over Japan. Each round gummy candy tastes just like the real thing!

I say:

As I fell in love with the subtle milky taste of Fujiya Milky Box, I was excited to try the Calpis Soda Gummies.   They claim to taste like the original Calpis Soda; a sweet and milky soft drink.  I haven’t tried it myself but these gummies give me a good indication as to the taste.

When you open up the packet – a resealable foil packet to keep things fresh – you are instantly hit with a smell of sweet milk.  To be honest I can find it quite off-putting at times.  It doesn’t stop me eating them though!   The gummy itself reminds me of an oversized jelly tot;  it has the same appearance and consistency, if that makes sense. The gummy is firm and it requires an equally firm chew; you’ve gotta put those molars to work.

Whilst Fujiya Milky Box has a subtle, sweet milk taste that kept me reaching in the packet for more, these are perhaps almost too sweet for me – I know, right?   I can just about manage two in one sitting, and then it can get a bit sickly.  However, because I am only eating two in one sitting, and then leaving them for a few days until I eat them again, this small packet has lasted me for a good while.  Then again, I think I’ve been eating them more because I’ve opened them and I don’t want them to go to waste; they’re not something I have been craving desperately.  I doubt that I will be repurchasing another bag of these in the future, but I wouldn’t rule out trying the drink in the future though!

If you like your gummies super sweet and incredibly milky, you’ll probably like these. I never thought my sweet tooth and I would be defeated by such a small gummy . I demand a trial by… another variety (500 friendship points if you get that small reference!).

What Japanese gummies have you tried?

They sound interesting… but strange! The combo of gummy and milk I’m not sure whether thats good or bad :) – do they taste like milk bottles?

They don’t! They are like a really really sweet milk taste, I think if it was just a sweet sugar taste it wouldn’t be that bad, it was the milk bit that made them sickly. Fujiya Milky Box do :) they’re so nice <3

I know I’ve tried these but they didn’t leave a memorable impression, which is odd for a Calpis product! :O
