Hello!  Today’s post is about something that took me by surprise; the Umaibo Choco Bites .

Umaibo is a classic Japanese snack.   Umaibo is made out of puffed corn, and usually comes in the form of a long, cylindrical shaped stick.   I had heard of Umaibo before, and I was aware that it came in savoury flavours such as curry; I had no idea they came in sweet flavours too.  This particular variety comes in small “bites” rather than in sticks, and in the packet there are a mixture of circle shapes and heart shapes.

I had mixed expectations to be honest.   Part of me was expecting something like chocolate flavoured Cheetos/Wotsits, and I wasn’t sure how to feel about that.  I like chocolate, but that would have been a step too far.   When I opened up the packet for the first time, I could instantly smell a lovely, chocolate scent.  Ooh!

The Umaibo Choco Bites proved me wrong; they ended up being light and similar to a wafer-like chocolate biscuit.   They actually reminded me of an UK biscuit snack we have called “Blue Ribbon”.  That is a wafer biscuit covered in chocolate.  I remember them being a lunchbox favourite when I was at school.  If you are familiar with Blue Ribbon, these taste exactly like them!

The Umaibo Choco Bites ended up becoming rather addictive .  The bites are chocolatey but not too chocolatey, if you know what I mean.  I wouldn’t say the chocolate is of high quality; it seems quite average.   However, they were a tasty snack overall, and rather nice with a cup of tea I have to say!

It’s a good job I only had a small bag of these or else I would have sat and ate my way through a huge bag without even realising.  Oh good, yet another Japanese snack I am addicted to.  Just what my waistline needed.    I have two savoury Umaibo offerings in the stash and I will be giving them a go very soon.  Let’s hope I do not become addicted to them too!
