Hello!  Today’s post is about a product I have been hoarding for too long, and should have spoken about a LOT sooner; Pocky – Chocolate Mint .

Pocky Chocolate Mint - Famous in Japan

Pocky – Chocolate Mint

This variety of Pocky was a gift from Nicole in one of our parcel swaps .   Pocky has to be the most well known brands of Japanese confectionery, and one of the most successful.

Pocky Chocolate Mint -- Famous in Japan

In its simplest form, Pocky is a crunchy biscuit stick coated with a flavoured coating.  It comes in (possibly!) hundreds of different flavours and varieties, including chocolate, strawberry, matcha, coffee… and many, many more.     The end of the stick is left uncovered to give the snack a “handle” ; you do not get the coating on to your fingers and hence make a mess.

The packaging of the Chocolate Mint variety is different to usual.  In my experience, the packet is usually foil.  This packet is white and plastic, with small transparent circles.  It’s rather fancy and I think I prefer it to the usual packaging!

I am a big fan of chocolate mint generally, but I wasn’t sure how it would work with Pocky.   Sometimes the advertised taste isn’t strong enough on Pocky, and more often then not I feel like I haven’t tasted it.

As soon as I opened the packet, I could smell this beautiful chocolate mint scent.   I took a bite, and I can confirm it was as tasty as the scent.

The  dark chocolate and mint coating  is sweet, without being overpowering or sickly.   T his combination works so well as the sweet mint tastes away the bitter taste from the dark chocolate, compared to when you have milk chocolate and mint (and it ends up being a battle of two sweet flavours).   The result?  A deliciously addictive snack.

Sadly,  my plan for mass repurchase has been foiled.  It seems like this is quite the rare variety of Pocky .   The Internet tells me it is only released once every year or so.  I can’t find them on any of my usual online stores.   There is always Amazon and/or eBay, but as I have never bought my Japanese confectionery from either of them  I cannot personally recommend them.   If you have a friend in Japan I would beg them to try and find these for you.

I think this is the best variety of Pocky I have tried so far.   I am gutted that it seems this particular variety is rare and hard to find.  It’s a good job I have so many more flavours in the stash to keep me going until this is re-released in Japan.  If I can find them for sale anywhere I’ll let you all know! Or maybe not… more Chocolate Mint Pocky for me! *evil laugh*

What is your favourite flavour of Pocky?
