I am partial to a subscription box or two, so when the opportunity arose to try the new service on the block – My Geek Box – I jumped at the chance.
My Geek Box – Afterlife
This month’s box had an ‘Afterlife’ theme, which ranged from Dracula to Zombies. I received a t-shirt, a graphic novel, a wall plaque, a wooden game, a tea towel (?) and what I believe is a car sticker.
Twisted Dark is the name of the graphic novel that was included in this month’s box. I haven’t read many graphic novels and to be truthful, this isn’t one I would choose for myself. I think I will pass this on to my brother, or perhaps a graphic novel loving friend. Whilst it isn’t something I would have bought myself, I do appreciate receiving a full size item like this in the box. It’s a great way of introducing graphic novels to new readers.
My Geek Box guarantees you receive a t-shirt with each box, and I’m happy to report there is an option for both men and women when it comes to selecting a choice. I will be donning this ‘Boo!’ t-shirt come Saturday in my attempt to dress up for Halloween. It is a Gildan Cotton t-shirt which I know from experience is of high quality.
The Dracula wooden game looks a lot of fun, and I can imagine this teasing a few brain cells or two. Unfortunately I don’t have a car, but perhaps the “Zombie Outbreak Response Team ” sticker can be used on a window? The bloody hand tea towel (?) is a little unusual but I bet it could be used as a Halloween decoration, for example as a small table cloth to keep the mess away. Finally, the zombie wall plaque is a fun item and I will pass this on to my parents who can use this for any future parties.
Whilst this theme is not one I would have chosen for myself, I still appreciate all the items I received. The t-shirt and graphic novel definitely make up the value of the box, and the other items are welcome extras . I do wish that there had been some branded items in here, for example something from The Walking Dead or perhaps even a Pop Vinyl from a similar franchise.
This was a good introduction to My Geek Box. This service would make a great gift to either yourself or a friend. I did have concerns that the service would be quite childish, but from the contents of the box I can see that it is aimed at older ‘geeks’ . I was quite alarmed at the theme of the graphic novel and it getting into the hands of young children who might have subscribed to this box. From a look on the website My Geek Box also offer a subscription service aimed at kids and young people which will hopefully have some age appropriate items.
In terms of shipping, my box was sent via Royal Mail tracking and arrived in about two days from dispatch. I received updates by text and email along the way which I really appreciated.
My Geek Box is £17.99 a month with free UK postage. It is a monthly subscription service, but they also have a shop on their site where you can buy lots of items, such as posters, games, t-shirts, and collectables. You could technically build your own My Geek Box every now and again if you didn’t want to commit yourself to an ongoing subscription. I’ll be keeping an eye on the site for the future boxes, and if there are any themes to do with animation I’ll definitely be treating myself to one.
Would you try My Geek Box?
