Hello! Today’s Japanese confectionery post is about a chocolate treat that left me disappointed; Meiji Marshmallow Chocolate.
Meiji Marshmallow Chocolate
This adorable box of Meiji Marshmallow Chocolate was one of the gifts in my last parcel swap with Nicole . I think she has realised how much of a sweet tooth I have…
I do love chocolate, with Meiji Meltykiss being up there as one of my favourite types ever. I also like marshmallows (I have not forgot about you, Calpis Marshmallows ), so I was rather eager to try this new chocolate treat from Meiji, and I had visions of falling in love. Sadly, it was not meant to be.
The Meiji Marshmallow Chocolates are milk chocolate balls with a white chocolate covered marshmallow centre . The outer milk chocolate is layer is thick, and when I bite into one of these I temporarily forget about the marshmallow centre, and I expect it to be completely solid. The milk chocolate is the usual trademark Meiji chocolate, and it was as enjoyable as always.
The white chocolate coating of the marshmallow centre is minimal, and easily missed if you are not paying attention. There is only a slight hint of the taste of it, and at first I put this down to the marshmallow. The marshmallow centre doesn’t taste like what I thought it would . I was imagining a bouncy, soft marshmallow but it is more of a hard, chewy marshmallow instead. The combination of the thick layer of milk chocolate and the rather chewy marshmallow is unusual and in all honesty I didn’t enjoy it that much . The clash of three sweet flavours and two different textures makes the Meiji Marshmallow Chocolate a very sickly treat.
I would not repurchase the Meiji Marshmallow Chocolate in the future as they did leave me feeling disappointed . Perhaps if they took normal marshmallows, and covered them in a thin layer of chocolate, they would have been a lot better and certainly more enjoyable. I might just send this idea to Meiji on a postcard – does anyone have a stamp?
