Current Blogging Distractions #1

I wanted to start a “ non-beauty favourites ” type of series on my blog, but that phrase didn’t seem to suit me or my content.   Talking about the things that are currently distracting me from blogging?  That sounds more like me!   I’m so easily distracted I am starting to believe that I may have been a Labrador in a past life…

Current Blogging Distractions 1 - Famous in Japan

Parks and Recreation

After I finished The Office (US),  I was left with a large TV show shaped void in my life.   I decided to finally hop on the Parks and Recreation bandwagon after seeing endless GIFS and screenshots.   In case you haven’t heard of it, I’ll quickly explain.  Parks and Recreation stars Amy Poehler (the “cool mom” in Mean Girls) as Lesley Knope, a government worker in the Parks and Recreation department of Pawnee.  Of course, there are plenty of silly situations that Lesley gets into in her quest to build parks.  It also stars Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari and Chris Pratt as Lesley’s colleagues and friends.  As it was created by one of the men who created The Office (US), they are quite similar in terms of writing and filming style.

At the time of writing, I am just about to start Season 5.  I’m trying my best not to watch any more episodes until I have got some blogging done but it is so easy to watch and to get into.  What often happens is that I put on an episode in the background whilst I tidy up, and then I end up sitting there for 5 episodes surrounded by junk… Oops .   I would recommend this show for anyone looking for a new easy, lighthearted watch.

Yo-Kai Watch (Anime and 3DS Game)

Never mind a blogging distraction, Yo-Kai Watch has become a complete life distraction .  If I am not playing the 3DS game, I am watching the anime.  If I am not watching the anime, I’m playing the 3DS game.    Yo-Kai Watch is about a young boy called Keita who unwittingly releases Whisper (a Yo-Kai) who has been sealed in what appears to be a gashapon machine.  Whisper gives Keita a “Yo-Kai Watch” so that Keita can detect, interact, befriend or even battle other Yo-Kai that are up to mischief in his town.

I know what you are thinking, and yes, it does sound similar to Pokemon.  However, I feel this is slightly more realistic and relatable. Let me explain.  “Yo-Kai” are an actual part of Japanese folklore – one example that comes to mind is “Kappa” .     I also like how in the anime in particular, Keita faces “normal” problems such as trying to impress the girl he likes and trying to get good grades at school.

The anime has me literally laughing out loud.  Sometimes it is so inappropriate it is hard to believe this is aimed at children!  I watch it in Japanese with English subtitles as I think some of the magic gets lost when it is dubbed – the voices for a start!  *cradles bleeding ears*  The 3DS game in particular steals hours of my life.   I can say “I’ll play for just 5 minutes…” and I will be on it for 5 hours.   I love how the game takes place in modern Japan and the areas you play in look like normal Japanese neighbourhoods.   It definitely doesn’t help my longing to go to Japan…

Thanks to Sami , I bought the game from Australia.  We have the same PAL region so it works on my UK 3DS.   I was so happy when she told me that as there was NO way I was waiting any longer.  When I bought the game, Nintendo had STILL not confirmed a UK release date.   I wish Yo-Kai would take off over here so I can buy ALL the merchandise, but then again, I like how unknown it is here. #HipsterDannie

Have you got anything currently distracting you, from blogging, work or even just LIFE?

  2. I’m looking forward to seeing how much of an impact Yokai Watch has here, in Japan it’s a fierce competitor for Pokemon, I wonder if that same boom of popularity will happen here like it did with Pokemon in the 90’s? :O

  3. I just played the Yo-Kai Watch demo & I really enjoyed it! The gameplay reminded me of a cross between Pokemon & SMT: Devil Survivor. I was on the fence before but I definitely want to buy it now. I didn’t realise that there’s also an anime, I’ll have to check it out! After a year long drought of games I’ve been on my 3DS constantly for the past few weeks. I’ve been playing Project X Zone 2 & have nearly finished Bravely Second. Need to get my hands on Hyrule Warriors Legends & Stella Glow next! xx
