Hello! Another day, another Japanese food post coming at cha!  I told you I needed to start eating some of it. Today, I’m bringing you my thoughts on the Butamen Instant Noodles in Soy flavour.

From OyatsuCafe – no link available (sorry!)

They say:

Butamen is the name of the pig mascot on these Soy Noodles.  Butamen brand are a staple of Japanese snack noodles and are prepared and sold in dagashi (candy) stores all over rural Japan.  Simply add around 180ml of hot water, cover, and wait for three minutes.  Then your Butamen noodles are ready to enjoy!

I say:

I have to admit I was really hesitant about trying these; I’m not so good at trying new foods much to the despair of friends and family.   I decided that I really had to give these a go sooner or later – I have heard that in Japan, ain’t nobody got time for fussy eaters.

Personally, I found the smell was barely noticeable, yet my mother and brother complained incessantly that they smelled bad.  I don’t know whether it’s because I was eating them and they were directly underneath me, but I thought I would mention it.  The noodles themselves were soft and small and they didn’t feel chewy or heavy.  When I first began to tuck in, I thought “oh these aren’t very filling” yet when I got to the end I felt comfortably full; none of that bursting at the seams feeling I suffer from too often!  The taste was alright; it was a subtle, salty taste (hey, no sniggering at the back!) .   I do have to mention that these noodles actually left me feeling a little bit dehydrated, so keep some water nearby!

I didn’t think I would like them, but I did! *pats self on back for trying something new*  I think if I were to somehow buy these again, I would perhaps choose a different flavour.   Even though I received these in an OyatsuBox, they are not available on OyatsuCafe, and I couldn’t find them anywhere else sadly.  They do have a snazzy website though – just a shame I can only read a bit of it!
