Afternoon Tea at Ox Pasture Hotel 3, Famous in Japan

Afternoon Tea at Ox Pasture Hall, Scarborough

Hello!  As some of you may already know, I moved to North Yorkshire over the summer.   I have to admit it has been a big change, and I feel rather lonely at times *gets t’violins out* .  However, the lovely Kel and Sammie travelled across the counties to come and see me not so long ago.  I gave them a very short and sweet tour of my new town, and they let me tag along for afternoon tea at Ox Pasture Hall .

I’ve never been to afternoon tea before – to be honest I wasn’t even sure what it entailed apart from something to do with tea – so I was excited.  When Kel pulled into the grounds of Ox Pasture Hall … my excitement went through the roof!  Even though it’s technically classed as Scarborough, you would have never thought it (soz Scarborough).  It is absolutely beautiful.

Our afternoon tea comprised of sandwiches, scones, cake and tea (obviously) in the Courtyard restaurant.  We also had some champagne but in the end, it was all about the tea.

The sandwiches were salmon, beef and (I think) cheese.  I remember that I wasn’t keen on any of the sandwiches and I wish there had been more of a selection, whether you chose it beforehand or when you arrived.  Maybe that’s just me being a fussy eater though, hey?

The scones caused some debate between the three of us, being 1) was it “s-cone” or “scon-e”?   2) Did you put jam first and then cream, or cream and then jam?  You know, the big issues in life.  I’ve never had scones with cream and jam so in the interest of keeping things fair, I tried a scone with cream and jam, and then another with jam and cream.  I thought the scones were a bit dry but other than that they were lovely.  I think I’m more of a cream first, jam second kinda gal.

By now,  I was quite bloated with the masses of tea I had downed, so I only had room for two cakes.  Poor me!  I tried Parkin, a true Yorkshire cake, and another cake – I can’t even remember what it was (this is what you get for leaving it so long!).   Again, the Parkin was nice albeit a bit dry and the CICRTNO (cake I can’t remember the name of) was very messy; the highlight of the day was Kel dropping hers whilst she was trying to move it from the stand to her plate.

Afterwards, we were treated to a tour around Ox Pasture.   I think I can confidently say that all of us fell in love with the place.   It is just beautiful; a true picture of what North Yorkshire is like.  What surprised me about Ox Pasture was that whilst it is one of the most tranquil and luxurious places to stay, they are dog friendly and they even have their own animals roaming about.   As you can see in the above picture, the  resident cat that has the gruelling and demanding job of keeping an eye on visitors (and having a little snooze in the sun).

I couldn’t get over how quiet it was at Ox Pasture.  There was no heavy traffic nor any pesky seagulls – both of which are rife at the seaside in Scarborough.  We agreed amongst ourselves that this would be the perfect place for a romantic weekend away, or even to get married.   I can only hope and dream of ensnaring an unlucky partner into my web, never mind convincing them to take me here.

All in all, I had a lovely day.  The afternoon tea was great for me as a beginner.   I feel for more experienced afternoon tea-goers like Kel and Sammie, it wasn’t as good as it could have been.  For me, the hotel is more appealing as a place to stay rather than somewhere to go for afternoon tea.  It can be a little out of the way for something like afternoon tea which only takes a few hours, but on the other hand it is perfect for a weekend away somewhere as it does feel you have been transported to somewhere completely different!

I was hoping I’d get away with my butter fingers but both you and sammie dropped me right in it (much like I dropped that cake right in the sugar bowl I suppose….)
