What I’ve Watched: Last Cinderella / ラスト シンデレラ | Spoiler Free Review

Film & TV

Hello!  I think we can all agree that it has been far too long since my last “What I’ve Watched”. Even though I have only done two of them, they are my most popular posts.  I decided to branch out into tv shows as well as films because I enjoy watching both!  However, as TV shows are quite long I thought I would just review the series as a whole rather than one by one.  If I were to do it one by one, I’ve have to set up another blog!

Today I thought I would talk about Last Cinderella .

The Plot:

Women today can sometimes forget about their gender, as they devote themselves deeper and deeper into their career. Among such women, some suffer overwork, unbalance of hormones, hair loss and the likes. In fact, few women even experience the growth of a thick mustache! According to a survey, there have been results indicating that about 60% of women feeling that they were “turning male” in the past. At 29, these women only had to be concerned with marriage or work, but at 39, the time limit draws nearer, with increased concerns of pregnancy, divorce, aging parents, and change of job.

“Last Cinderella” will depict the reality of these women, who try their best to live each day to their fullest. Playing the main character, a 39 year old female hair stylist Toyama Sakura is Shinohara Ryoko. Sakura meets a handsome younger man, Saeki Hiroto at a party and is drawn to him. A BMX rider since age 20, Hiroto’s income is dependent on his performance, which means that his pay is unstable. As he gets to know Sakura, he is slowly drawn to her as well. Then there is Tachibana Rintaro, Sakura’s boss and good friend, Takenouchi Miki, Sakura’s best friend who suffers from a sexless marriage, and Hasegawa Shima, the other best friend who is addicted to sex, and finally a regular customer to the hair salon, Ooami Chiyoko who is in love with Rintaro. It’s a modern heart-thumping love comedy that’s sure to make you smile! — Fuji TV – [ Source – Drama Wiki ]

I have tried to keep this spoiler free as best as I can!

What I Thought:

I love, love, loved this drama! Sakura is my hero.  She’s  a sassy, independent woman who don’t need no man.  In this drama she is meant to be 40 years old – there are parts where I think she looks younger than me!    There was great banter between her and Rintaro, her male boss.  They snipe like an old married couple!  There were some parts where Rintaro annoyed the stuffing out of me but then they were times where I thought he was hilarious.  Similarly, I found Sakura’s best friends quite likeable.

What I Liked:

Haruma Miura:

Haruma Miura - Last Cinderella

Pretty much the reason I started watching this drama was Haruma.  Even though YES he is nice to look at, and YES I have written a couple of creepily obsessive blog posts about him I think he was good in this drama – I wish he would do more roles like this, however I think he’s had quite the explosion of popularity in Japan recently so he’s doing more serious roles.

The Soundtrack:

When I finished watching Last Cinderella I immediately downloaded the soundtrack.  I love it!  To me, I find it rather “quaint” and “gentle” but maybe it’s like that to me because I also listen to things such as Bring Me The Horizon.  I actually featured one of the songs in my old #MUSICMONDAY posts – Last Cinderella .  If you can’t find a download link, or you don’t want to commit to downloading it there are plenty of YouTube playlists.

What I Didn’t Like:

Haruma Miura :

Haruma Miura - Last Cinderella 2

Quickest way to stop any obsession in its track.  I’m sorry Haruma, but this is NOT a good look for you.  Please do not do this anymore.  Yours sincerely, Danniella.

The Ending:

I think the ending divided a lot of fans, judging by the comments I’ve seen in other reviews and in comment boxess.   As the ending is Sakura choosing between two men, you either want her with one or the other.   It was not a bad ending, it just wasn’t the one I would have preferred!  I’m just glad that no one died as is usually the norm in j-dramas!

Rating:

5/5 – This is one of my favourite Japanese TV shows that I have watched so far.  I think I might have to watch it again soon as my current obsession, Yusuke Yamamoto , was apparently in a few episodes and I DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE.  What on earth am I doing with my life?! *grumbles at self*

Have you watched Last Cinderella, or any other dramas lately?

Danniella x

That sounds really interesting and funny. At the moment I’m working my way through series one of Nashville, which I think is a drama, if you’ve not seen it / seen it advertised the best way I could think to describe it is Glee meets country music, but better.
