How To Do A Messy Bun + Giveaway!

Hello! I have to admit that there are some beauty related things I cannot do in life despite being a massive beauty addict; one of them being “how to do a messy bun”.  I’ve always been insanely jealous of the girls who could do it without batting an eyelid.   Recently, I’ve learned how to do one.  Sort of.  It seems I cannot do the mainstream “bun on head” as is seen on the young and trendy, but I’ve managed to do one that suits me and my (recently discovered) weirdly shaped head.

How To Do A Messy Bun:

One of the easiest hairstyles for any girl to do is the messy bun. This style is perfect for when the weather is hot and you are on your feet all day as it keeps your hair out of your face and minimises frizz . It can be thrown together in a matter of minutes and is flattering for all hair colours.

Normally, the messy bun works best for medium to long hair but the technique below can be accommodated to every hair type and cut. So whether you are looking to dress up or down, follow the steps below to achieve this look.

1. Comb all of your hair up into a high ponytail on the top of your head behind your crown

2. Using a hair elastic, pull your hair through

3. Twist the hair elastic once to tighten the hold

4. Spread your hair out evenly into a donut shape around the hair elastic

5. Using the twisted hair elastic, tie it over the top of the donut shape until secure

6. Softly pull on the bun to increase its size, add more volume and make it look messy

7. Place the pieces of hair that are sticking out from underneath the hair elastic strategically around the base of the bun

8. Using hair grips, secure any uneven parts of the bun or sections that have become loose

9. Finish by spraying some hairspray over the bun to ensure that it stays in place for the rest of the day or your night on the town

When styling this updo, there are a number of tips that will make your hair a lot easier to work with. From personal experience, I find it easier to style unwashed hair that hasn’t been touched for a day or two. Your hair will have developed some natural oils which will help to hold and shape the bun.

If you have naturally straight hair, apply some sea salt spray  when it is damp to add waves and give it some more texture. Alternatively, if your hair is wavy or curly, make the most of this and let it texture take. This will increase the size of your bun and enhance the messiness of this style.

Would you believe that I’m now an up-do convert? It’s the perfect quick fix hairstyle for those days you either don’t have the time or you don’t have the patience for anything fancy.   I was told that having my hair up made me look older, so I will be putting my hair up if I ever forget my ID!

As well as teaching me the ways of the bun, I’ve also kindly been given a set of Sheer Blonde Shampoo + Conditioner to give away to one lucky duck.   The winner will also receive a branded Sheer Blonde tote bag that can be used on the beach… or on the high street!

I fail at the on top of the head messy bun too, I just cannot get it all on top of my head – how do people do it and why can’t I?!

I wear a messy bun quite often, like you say it’s best when your hair is a couple of days old. When it’s freshly washed it just won’t hold the messy look I find.

I think we just aren’t mean to do it! It makes my head look really square sometimes hahah! It doesn’t, it slips around and doesn’t hold :( x
