Hello! I’m slowly bracing you all for the inevitable onslaught of Pocky reviews – I might even dedicate a full week to the humble snack *muses* Today’s post is about Meiji’s answer to Pocky; Meiji Fran – Chocolate Cream.
Meiji Fran – Chocolate Cream
I think you can all guess how Meiji Fran came into my possession… if you said OyatsuBox you are correct! Meiji Fran is Meiji’s attempt at a Pocky-like snack; I love how everyone has tried to bring out their own variety.
With Meiji Fran you receive 3 sealed foil packets each containing 3 large sticks. I originally envisaged this concept allowing me to pace myself and not eat them all at once, but I demolished all 9 sticks quicker then I would like to admit to….
I wasn’t sure what to expect with Meiji Fran, but from my very first bite any trepidation I had melted away.
The chocolate cream coating has a whipped texture and a creamy, sweet taste. It actually reminded me of ice cream. Compared to Pocky, the chocolate cream coating is so thick. You can really feel just how thick the coating is when you take a bite. I have to say that the sticks feel a lot heavier than Pocky; they’ve really got some weight to them! It must be the chocolate cream coating…
The butter taste of the cookie sticks is quite sweet. The butter taste seems to be more noticeable when you are eating the uncovered part of the stick. Luckily, the sweet butter taste and chocolate cream go well together. The butter taste gives the stick a real “cookie” like taste.
I wasn’t sure at first why Meiji were bragging about these being made with real butter, but when I thought about it I realised it wouldn’t look good on Meiji if they were bragging they had used the Japanese equivalent of “I can’t believe it’s not butter”.
I would definitely buy these again in the future as I thought they were a rather filling and satisfying snack. At a push, I think I prefer them to Pocky. They are currently out of stock on OyatsuCafe at the moment due to the scorching hot summer in Japan, but I have found them available on TofuCute if you were interested in trying Meiji Fran for yourself.
Would you ever try Meiji Fran, or are you loyal to Pocky?
