Don’t Trust This Book
Don’t Trust These People
Don’t Trust Yourself
And whatever you do, DON’T give away that ending…
Louise: Since her husband walked out, Louise has made her son her world, supporting them both with her part-time job. But all that changes when she meets…
David: Young, successful and charming – Louise cannot believe a man like him would look at her twice let alone be attracted to her. But that all comes to a grinding halt when she meets his wife…
Adele: Beautiful, elegant and sweet – Louise’s new friend seems perfect in every way. As she becomes obsessed by this flawless couple, entangled in the intricate web of their marriage, they each, in turn, reach out to her.
But only when she gets to know them both does she begin to see the cracks… Is David really is the man she thought she knew and is Adele as vulnerable as she appears?
Just what terrible secrets are they both hiding and how far will they go to keep them?
When I was offered the opportunity to read and review Sarah Pinborough’s latest book, Behind Her Eyes, I couldn’t say “yes!” fast enough. Considering I had read, and adored, her last book “13 Minutes“, I had high expectations. Whilst I was more than happy to read and review Behind Her Eyes in my usual manner, I couldn’t believe my luck when I was asked to be part of the official blog tour for the book. I’m feeling the pressure to be as good as my fellow blog tour-goers though… *sweats nervously*
In recent years, we have seen a huge explosion of thrillers focusing on the secrets and lies in a marriage; Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train are two books that spring to mind, and I have no doubt that there are others. Being someone who enjoyed both of these books it wasn’t much of a surprise that I loved Behind Her Eyes. I’ll be honest, it is hard to fully review Behind Her Eyes for fear of spoiling it. Believe me, you would not want this book to be spoiled.
Behind Her Eyes is going to be 2017’s big thriller, and it will divide opinion like no other book.
(seriously, can people hurry up and read it because I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT)
*clutches Kindle to chest desperately*
Behind Her Eyes kicks off the story with Louise meeting David in a bar. Louise, a lonely single mum, can’t quite believe her luck that the charming and handsome David would be interested in her. However, her joy turns to shame when she realises that the new love in her life is married, and by a further stroke of bad luck, her new boss. Through a chance meeting, and despite her guilty conscience, she quickly becomes friends with David’s wife, Adele. Louise soon realises that there is more to their marriage than what meets the eye. Is David the man she thought he was? Why is Adele afraid of him? Is Louise putting herself in danger?
Behind Her Eyes is told from the alternating perspectives of Louise and Adele in the present, interspersed with a third person viewpoint in the past, giving the reader a deeper insight into the characters. I enjoyed this method of storytelling – the intense, grip-you-by-the-throat writing style together with the first person narrative ensured we were firmly in the character’s heads, knowing their every emotion and thought.
With regards to Louise and Adele, they were such distinct, well-written characters, and it’s going to be hard to forget them. David is a character we only get to know via Louise’s and Adele’s narratives. You will have a different opinion of him depending on whose perspective you’re reading. as you could say Louise and Adele each know a different version of David… *raises eyebrows mysteriously* Even now, I’m not too sure what to make of David… He’s definitely the weakest character out of the three, but considering the story is very much focused on Louise and Adele. this isn’t a negative for me. In fact, it’s probably a positive thing, as a David chapter would take away a chapter from Louise and/or Adele, which I wouldn’t have liked AT ALL.*stern face*
The ending… OH MY, THAT ENDING was something else. I’m still in shock! With most books, I can tend to guess the “twist” about 3/4 of the way through, but not with Behind Her Eyes. No, NO, DEFINITELY not (500 points if you get the reference!). I genuinely wasn’t expecting it at all, but at the same time, it was like OHMYGODTHISHASBLOWNMYTINYMIND. I had just about wrapped my head around the ending, and then the final chapter metaphorically punched me in the face. HarperCollins nailed my reaction with their hashtag #WTFthatending. I’m tempted to re-read Behind Her Eyes knowing how it ends, to see how I would interpret it the second time around. However, I think for most people reading this book, one read through will be enough… *laughs mysteriously*
I rated Behind Her Eyes 5/5 stars on GoodReads as I found it to be a truly mesmerising and deliciously addictive read. I was glued to this book, snatching any moment I could to read it. I squeezed in a few pages during my lunch breaks, as well as holing myself up in bed as soon as I got home from work to read some more. I raced through every page and as said previously, was absolutely blown away by the ending. It’s become one of my favourite reads of 2017, and we’re only in February.
I know I said in my 13 Minutes review that I wanted to read more from Sarah Pinborough, but after reading Behind Her Eyes I now NEED to read more from her. I think Behind Her Eyes would be brilliant adapted for the big screen, or small screen if we consider a Netflix adaptation (did I mention a 13 Minutes adaptation is in the works?). If it ever made it to the big screen, I would love to see people’s reactions. Similar to Gogglebox, but set in cinemas instead… hmm, I think I might be on to something here…
Wait a minute, that’s not all folks!
