Urban Decay Perversion Mascara

Posted in Beauty

Oh my goodness, it has been an absolute age since I last did a make-up review!  I really need to get back on to the “make up reviewing horse”…  To kick things off, here are my thoughts on the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara - Review - Famous in Japan

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara

£17.50 – Debenhams

They say:

Get bigger, blacker, badder lashes with our ultra-creamy, lengthening and volumizing mascara. For lashings of sex appeal and high voltage drama, introduce Perversion Mascara into your make up bag. Build, separate and define lashes with the purest, most intense black pigments for bigger, blacker, badder lashes.

Not too wet and not too dry, Perversion Mascara glides effortlessly through lashes, coating them in creamy, full bodied texture. Build up coats of super black volume for a glamorous wide-eye effect.

The days of clumpy, brittle lashes are long gone. Urban Decay volumising mascara will have you hooked with its high tech brush, which defines and separates as it glides through lashes. It gives you the control to build a bespoke eye look.

Frame eyes and revolutionise your lashes with a look that’s bigger, blacker and badder.

I say:

It goes without saying that I am a huge fan of Urban Decay.   Their original Primer Potion has changed my life, and I have a lorra lorra love for their lipsticks and eyeshadows.   When Urban Decay launched the Perversion Mascara I wanted it, but the initial reviews were so mixed I held off buying it, and eventually I forgot about it.   When I found Debenhams selling the Perversion Mascara and the 24/7 Liner in Perversion together for £22, I decided that it was finally time to give it a go.

I believe that the inspiration behind the Perversion Mascara was the existing 24/7 Liner in Perversion.  The founder of Urban Decay Wende Zomnir, was such a huge fan of the “blacker than black” pigment of the Perversion Liner,  she wanted the same effect in a mascara.  After “formulating and personally testing 80 or 90 different formulas”, Perversion Mascara was born.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara - Brush - Famous in Japan

I’ll be honest, my first impressions of the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara were not particularly great.  I am not a fan of tapered brush wands at the best of times, and I much prefer brushes with plastic bristles.  As I expected (and dare I say, dreaded), the brush head was far too large to apply the mascara neatly, and I found it ended up on my eyelid and under eye area more times than my actual eyelashes.  *sighs*

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara - After - Famous in Japan

Let’s talk about the formula.   Well, the formula of the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara was as disappointing as the brush.   Even though I know the formula is designed to be thin so that it can be layered comfortably without clumping, for me the formula was too wet and too thin.   When paired with the huge brush, my patience quickly ran thin when I had to spend up to 5 full minutes applying the mascara ever so carefully, waiting for it to dry, carefully applying another layer, waiting for it to dry, and repeating until I finally got the look I wanted.  Heaven help me should I sneeze or close my eyes too tightly after I had applied it… smudges, smudges everywhere! *flails dramatically*

Whilst the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara boasts “a nourishing ingredient blend”, including proteins and amino acids, I didn’t see an improvement in the look and feel of my lashes, nor did I see a declineI’m not quite sure what to make of that claim… *shrugs*

Whilst we are still on the topic of the formula, I noticed that it seemed to stain my eye area.  I noticed that I would have smudging under my eyes after a few hours wear, despite not rubbing my eyes or having watery eyes in general.  I also noticed that despite numerous cotton pads of eye make up remover, and as well as using a separate cleanser, I would still have panda eyes after cleansing, and when I woke up the next morning.

In terms of longevity, the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara can last upwards of 8+ hours and seems fairly resistant to what the day can throw at you, such as water or sweat.   However, like I said a few sentences ago, I did notice smudging under my eyes after a few hours.  If you are wanting a mascara that will last all day (and perhaps all night) I would not recommend Perversion Mascara as there is no guarantee it is fully waterproof/lifeproof.

The above pictures are one coat of the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara, and I think we can all agree that the results are not spectacular, especially from a high-end brand.  I know the Perversion Mascara is recommended to be used in conjunction with the Subversion Primer, but let’s be realI shouldn’t have to spend £15.50 to get the best results from a product that already costs £17.50 on its own.

Whilst the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara isn’t terrible, it is a disappointment compared to the other products that Urban Decay produces.  It’s not something I would repurchase nor is it a product I would recommend.   In all honesty I am not sure who I would recommend Perversion Mascara to, as you can get similar results from a high street mascara.  Even though this particular product was disappointing, it hasn’t put me off Urban Decay and you can guarantee I’ll be getting my grubby hands on their upcoming releases of the Ultimate Basics palette and the All Nighter foundation*dribbles in anticipation*

Have you tried any Urban Decay products?  What’s your favourite?

I was pretty disappointed with this mascara too, I received a sample of it not too long ago (not sure when or how) but I found it quite clumpy – I did enjoy the Benefit’s they’re real primer or whatever it is but wasn’t a big fan of their mascara – I did receive a sample of the chanel dimensions (or whatever it is again aha) and I quite liked that.

I’m not really a fan of UD, I’ve found their shadows to be lackluster (although I haven’t tried Naked 1,2, or 3 so maybe I’ll try that one day). I’m obsessed with the liquid liner from KVD at the moment (got a sample from debenhams) and it’s glorious! You should definitely try it :)

It’s a shame this wasn’t a good product. It’s so weird what with Urban Decay’s stuff usually being amazing, but on a plus note, I think your lashes look really nice! Just a shame all that effort has to go into something that should be the easiest step of your makeup routine :/

What a shame that this mascara didn’t live up to the claims. Everyone seems to say they prefer bristle brushes when it comes to mascara, but I agree with you and always find plastic wands more effective. Your lashes are naturally amazing, so any mascara makes them look incredible, including this one!

I tend to stick to my trusty Maybelline Lash Sensational, but I know that if I ever want to pick up a new mascara to steer clear of this one! I can’t stand it when mascaras transfer/stain under my eyes! Such a shame!
